IPPL was founded in 1973 by Dr. Shirley McGreal after moving to Thailand and learning of the terrible conditions under which primates were being captured and sold into the pet trade. In 1977 she founded IPPL's sanctuary where over the years close to 60 gibbons have lived and thrived, coming from various backgrounds such as the exotic pet trade, laboratories, zoos, and tourist attractions.
IPPL has also been home to over 30 Asian Small Clawed Otters, most coming from the pet trade or zoos. Shirley worked for the remainder of her life to fight for primates great and small, and our organization will continue this mission into the future.
